Farm Bill Passes- No Grassley Amendment

Farm Bill Passes- No Grassley Amendment

Announcement from US Hemp Roundtable:

“American farmers, small businesspeople, and consumers have enthusiastically embraced the recent introduction of The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 which would permanently legalize hemp. Thanks to the efforts of Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and a bi-partisan array of supporters, including Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Hemp Farming Act has been attached to the Senate version of the 2018 Farm Bill, which is expected to become law this year.

Late yesterday, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) filed an amendment to the Farm Bill that would devastate the industry's efforts to promote full legalization of hemp and hemp products. Specifically, Grassley's amendment would explicitly exclude "cannabinoids," "extracts" and "derivatives" from the definition of hemp. This could mean that popular products such as hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) may be treated by the DEA as a Schedule 1 controlled substance - akin to heroin.

Fortunately, after thousands of calls, emails and social media posts by Hemp Supporters across the country, Washington listened, and the Farm Bill was passed by the committee (20-1) without even voting on the Grassley Amendment. However, Sen. Grassley indicated that he wants to continue the discussion, so we need to be vigilant. We still need you to contact your Senators to resist any future attempt to amend the Farm Bill with Sen. Grassley's language, or anything similar.”

Using this link US Hemp Roundtable provides you with a simple way to send email messages to your Senators. You have the option to use previously drafted messages, or it would be even more effective for you to personalize the email by telling your representatives why hemp and hemp products are so important to you, your business, and/or your farm community. NOTE: It’s important to stay clear of medical claims in your messages.

We are NOT done yet!
Two things you can do TODAY

1. CALL YOUR SENATORS- this is so simple, do not be nervous! They only need to hear from a dozen or so of their constituents to put this on their radar.

2. EMAIL Visit US Hemp Roundtable's online portal to urge your US Senators to vote "no" on the Grassley, Anti-Hemp, Anti-Farmer amendment. It is especially critical to contact your Senator if s/he is a Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee (check the roster here).
Script when you call/write your Senator:

I ask you to keep Farm Bill 2018 on your radar. Potentially harmful changes such as Senator Grassley's Amendment could completely undermine the popular, bipartisan effort led by Senate Leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer to permanently legalize hemp.  Amendments like this would try to designate certain hemp products, such as the popular hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD), as Schedule 1 controlled substances - akin to heroin. It's imperative that we keep the current language in the Farm Bill to protect hemp products.

It's important to emphasize hemp is NOT marijuana - and hemp-derived CBD is not medical marijuana  -  it has zero or virtually no THC, meaning that it can't get you high.  The World Health Organization has declared that CBD is safe and non-addictive.  More than 50% of hemp farmers who have participated in federally-authorized state pilot programs are involved in CBD projects because they provide mature and viable markets for their hemp crops.   Legalizing hemp does no good for our farm economy if you declare popular hemp products illegal.

The hemp industry is critical for the future of farmers, manufacturing industries and small business owners in our state. Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you for fighting for safe and continued access to hemp and CBD products. Your voices are heard!
